Checklist: Identifying and solving condensation, damp and mould.

We met EnviroVent on the landlord investor circuit and were really impressed with the way they spent a lot of time and effort educating landlords to rid their property of condensation and mould problems – one of the biggest issues in the private rented sector. Phil, the National Sales Manager, then came to Kate’s home to assess it so she could really understand the role they played in making sure a property keeps free of condensation and mould.

EnviroVent were pivotal in helping Kate put together the UK’s most comprehensive Damp, Mould and Condensation Report for the private rented sector to help educate and inform the media, MPs and landlords on how to rid the sector of a problem that just shouldn’t be an issue – if properly diagnosed.

Top three tips

  1. Consider a whole house ventilation system - The average four-person family creates 112 pints of moisture every week, from just breathing, cooking, showering and boiling the kettle. To help remove excessive moisture and reduce humidity levels, EnviroVent recommend a whole house ventilation system, like Positive Input Ventilation (PIV), which works by drawing in fresh, filtered, clean air from outside and gently ventilating the home from a central position. These units dilute moisture-laden air, displacing it and replacing it to control humidity levels between 45% and 60%, reducing the moisture and in turn removing condensation problems. The health benefits and improvements to the air quality could be immediate.

  1. Have the air quality tested - If a householder is experiencing condensation or mould issues, then it’s a good idea to have a ventilation survey. An experienced ventilation company, such as EnviroVent, can help by providing a no obligation, free home survey and advice on the best approach to improve the air quality within your home. Issues with condensation and mould can easily be eradicated for the long term, without the use of mould sprays or the need for regular redecoration

  1. Dry with care - Householders should try to avoid drying washing indoors, especially on the radiators as this can cause humidity levels to rise, which is when condensation starts to form. If laundry has to be dried inside, it should be done in a well ventilated room, like the bathroom, with the door closed.
